Hopeful 2020 from my little barrier island home. Nice fireworks on the beach, beautiful stars out, and I’m going to finish off the last of the 2019 junk food over the next day or two and then get to work on building a better life. “Twenty twenty” just sounds like a year of serious business… I intend to get my shit together… Let’s all have a better one.

So: ready to sack out, bolstered by some New Years’ cheer ( pronounced “glen mo- RANJY”) - but before I do, I’d just like to wish the whole LGF universe ( Lizards, lurkers and lookie-loos) the best wishes for 2020 I can muster.
Happy New Year, y’all! 😺

Same ol ’ shit, just a different year. I’ll be the last LGFer stuck in 2019 (for an hour).

To all those who have, or are about to jump into 2020, have a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

To Charles (and my anonymous Secret Santa) thanks for allowing me to participate on this great forum.

And, I’ll turn off the 2019 lights. I should be awake as the fireworks/firearms explosions are just beginning. It’s raining cats and dogs outside and those idiots are still banging away. Don’t know they’re keeping their powder dry.

The organ of the Sint-Bavokerk (the Christiaan Müller organ) is one of the world’s most historically important organs. It was built by the Amsterdam organ builder Christian Müller, with stucco decorations by the Amsterdam artist Jan van Logteren, between 1735 and 1738. Upon completion it was the largest organ in the world with 60 voices and 32-foot pedal-towers.

In Moby-Dick (1851), Herman Melville describes the inside of a whale’s mouth:

“Seeing all these colonnades of bone so methodically ranged about, would you not think you were inside of the great Haarlem organ, and gazing upon its thousand pipes?”

Many famous musicians played this organ, including Mendelssohn, Händel and the 10-year-old Mozart, who played it in 1766. The organ was modified a number of times in the 19th and 20th centuries and most drastically altered in the renovation by Marcussen between 1959 and 1961. Further voicing work was undertaken between 1987 and 2000. Today concerts are regularly held in the church, and all through the year special opening times are organized so the public can walk in free of charge to listen to this famous organ in action.

So 2020 is looking to be a banner year for batshit crazy!

Rudy Giuliani, who serves as President Trump’s personal attorney, said Tuesday night that he would be willing to testify in a Senate impeachment trial for the president.

“I would testify,” Giuliani told reporters as he arrived at a New Year’s Eve party at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

He added that he could “do demonstrations” and that he’d “love to try the case.”

Giuliani is not expected to be a part of Trump’s defense team.

LOL it would be a train wreck. I would think that McConnell and Graham would be shitting themselves if this senile old fool went up on the stand and started blabbering.

So I get up this New Year morning at 6:20AM to my alarm that I forgot to silence last night, no big deal since I prob wouldn’t have slept much longer anyway. I had no alcohol yesterday at all so was not even going to get the extra sleep that might have given me. Come downstairs with cat hot on my heels. Clean out coffee filter basket, cat is whining to go outside, rinse and refill coffee pot with water and pour into coffee maker and turn on. Cat and I go outside, me for a smoke and her to just patrol her area for a few (not bad outside, about 27F with no wind).

We come back inside and I go into the kitchen to get a cuppa, and the water is still clear. I forgot to put the actual coffee into the basket. Welcome 2020.

This reminds me of an incident that happened a few years ago. I was at a bookstore that had a cafe (Borders at King of Prussia Mall) and there was a family that was waiting at a table for a person to arrive. When this person (a “coach” that helped people get scholarships to colleges) he walked over to the table and sat down. He read over the entrance application and a composition. He made a few suggestions and the mother preceded to take him down verbally. She want him to guarantee that her son would get into the college he was applying to. The manager of the bookstore had to call the police because the woman was causing a ruckus.

I was chatting online earlier with a friend of mine who lives in Canberra. The air is, to put it mildly, completely unreasonable and unlivable. There’s smoke IN the buildings.

theguardian.com

Air quality starts getting bad at 151 and hazardous at 200. According to this article, the air quality in the Canberra area is between 3,000 and 4,000. By comparison, this is a bad air quality day in Phoenix, with the west side of town recording 358.

And in the ongoing saga of the two missing children, the Rexburg (ID) police chief has pretty much had enough:

“It is astonishing that rather than work with law enforcement to help us locate her own children, Lori Vallow has chosen instead to leave the state with her new husband,” police said in a statement.

“We publicly call on Lori Vallow/Daybell and Chad Daybell to do the right thing and come forward with the information they have about the location and welfare of Joshua and Tylee. This entire investigation could have been avoided if Lori and Chad had simply been honest with law enforcement.”

thedailybeast.com

Interesting that the couple have left Idaho, but where are the kids?

I’ve been lurking in some strange places on the intertubes to try and get a better idea of what’s going on, but it appears that even Chad’s old buddies in the Mormon dreams and visions community are as clueless as the cops. I’m just hoping the cops have talked to those people.

That was odd. In Philly on New Years Day the Mummers put on their parade to start the new year. I just did a search and saw two websites for sale for $5500 a piece. Here is what one of them looks like: mummers.com

This is the website I normally go to for the Mummers.

today’s electoral-vote.com has a scathing year in review re the trump administration

the two most potent lines:

…the disasters come so fast and furious that previous setbacks quickly evaporate. How many items above did you read and say, “Oh year, I forgot about that!”

however:

…[impeachment]… will almost certainly be the thing that Trump is most remembered for once he leaves office.

A Texas woman was killed by a stray bullet* while celebrating New Year’s Eve with her family.

Sheriff’s deputies said Philippa Ashford was struck by celebratory gunfire just minutes after midnight at the end of her driveway in a Harris County subdivision, reported KTRK-TV.

Am I marking myself hopelessly as an Old by wondering when it was that “celebratory gunfire” to mark New Years’ became a thing in America?

Firing off guns as “celebration” isn’t new, of course, but I have always associated it with backward “Third World” cultures.

I was disappointed to find that there is apparently no Lang, Arizona, New Mexico, etc. Best candidate is Lang, New South Wales

Lang, New South Wales, is a remote civil parish of Poole County in far northwest New South Wales. located at 29°30′25″S 141°31′10″E.

The geography of the parish is mostly the flat, arid landscape of the Channel Country. The parish has a Köppen climate classification of BWh (Hot desert).[3] The County is barely inhabited with a population density of less than 1 person per 150 km² and the landscape is a flat arid scrubland..

For the third year in a row I kept my New Year’s resolution.

It has been “during the next year, don’t write last year on a cheque.”

I try to keep my resolutions simple. So this year’s resolution is “don’t write 2019 on a cheque.”

Apes, monkeys among 30 animals killed in German zoo fire

BERLIN - A fire raced through a zoo in western Germany in the first few minutes of the new year, killing more than 30 animals, including apes, monkeys, bats and birds, authorities said. Police said paper sky lanterns launched nearby to celebrate the arrival of 2020 were probably to blame.

Several witnesses saw cylindrical paper lanterns with little fires inside flying in the night sky shortly after midnight Wednesday near the Krefeld Zoo, Gerd Hoppmann, the city’s head of criminal police, told reporters.

“People reported seeing those sky lanterns flying at low altitude near the zoo and then it started burning,” Hoppmann said.

He said investigators also found used lanterns on the ground that hadn’t burned entirely. They were 34 centimeters (over 13 inches) long, made out of white paper with an opening at the bottom where a small fire would be suspended. The fire heats the air inside, making them fly and shine at night.

Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room.
